Book Review: The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This book, as mentioned many times in reviews, started off a little bit too reminiscent of Harry Potter (Half-blood Hill? A boy of 11/12 with magical powers? 2 friends who must help him on his quest?). But it managed to get its own personality eventually. I liked the book overall... Percy is a bit more gritty, more funny, and well, more American than Harry Potter, though I feel like we don't get to know him quite as well. There were certain scenes and ideas that I loved- like the hotel in Las Vegas where you end up wasting your life away on video games and other distractions. I certainly know how that feels! At times it really felt like a movie script, with cheesy one-liners that you could just imagine on the big screen (though I was reading this the weekend the movie was opening, so maybe I had it on my mind). Overall, it was enjoyable, and I'll be continuing the series, but it did feel a bit "young" to me. I'm hoping, like in the Harry Potter series, that it matures a bit over the next few books.
