Book Review: Re-read of Outlander 1 & 2

I love these books. I love them so much that I raced through them the second time almost as fast as the first time. I'm not sure if I'll read the whole series again, but then again, I might just have to, because they pull me in.

Outlander (Outlander, #1) Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I just re-read this book, and I'm still amazed at how awesome this book is. Claire and Jaime are probably my favorite couple out of all the books I've ever read- they are both such strong characters, and so well-described that I feel like they are my close friends.

Gabaldon does an artful job of building their relationship while keeping the action coming... and there are twists and turns you never see coming. Every character is carefully formed into a very real person with flaws, hopes, failures, and personal motivations. I love the whole series, but this first book is really a masterpiece.

Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, #2) Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I just finished re-reading this, and I love it even more the second time. The first time I was frustrated by all the politics, which can be hard to follow. I'm much more clear on it all now.

This book is a perfect mix of drama, romance, twisty turns, humor, and wonderful characters. Gabaldon is artful in surprising her readers with plot twists- even on the second read, I found myself surprised all over again at things I had forgotten!

I love the further development of Jamie and Claire's relationship in this book- and the ending just breaks my heart, and makes me want to dive into the third installment all over again.

This book is so good, it's like spending time with your very best friends. I'm sure I'll be doing many more re-reads in the future.

The only negative comment- this book, more than any of the others, is a bit over the top with "title" references- in other words, I could probably name at least 10 times amber or bugs stuck in amber come up. I'm all for clever references to the title but this is like beating your head on a stick with it.

  2. I love her characters so much. I wanted to name my first daughter Claire because she's such a strong female but the name is just way too popular.

I also have a beef with the titles, but for me it's more because aside from Outlander, they have nothing to do with the story! I can't ever remember which one Dragonfly in Amber is because it doesn't have to do with the overall plot at all! It's like someone comes up with a random, mean-nothing title and then they insert some references to it and publish away.
