Dining Review: Pat's King of Steaks

misc 4661

Last weekend, we headed up to Philadelphia for a brief visit to see one of Kevin's Marine friends who was in town (I apologize to other Philly friends we didn't see... we're hoping to be back soon!). Last time we went to Philly, we got some more gourmet kind of cheesesteak that was highly rated on Yelp, but Kevin felt like we should go try out the ever famous Pat's King of Steaks to say that we officially tried "the" Philly Cheesesteak (some would argue that Geno's across the street is better- this is highly debated, apparently).

Pat's was fine- mostly good for the experience. The line wasn't too long and it moved fast. Ordering was a little stressful. :) The cheesesteak was okay (I had the mushroom steak "whiz wit"- with cheese whiz and onions). It tasted fine, but I wasn't blown away or anything. As Kevin said, we've probably had better cheesesteak elsewhere, but at least now we've been to what some would consider the gold standard.

We liked that Pat's is a bit more "down home" than flashy Geno's across the street.

More on the rest of our brief afternoon in Philadelphia coming up!

  1. Just to add in my two cents...we think that Geno's steaks are better b/c the meat seems like it's a better quality...less fatty or something? However, most Philly folks will tell you that they've had a better cheesesteak than Geno's or Pat's. Lorenzo's in the Italian Market is supposedly a lot of people's favorite place!

  2. Hmm, maybe we should have tried Geno's instead. We actually went to another place the first time and it was pretty good (and they had Gremlins)- but I really want to go to the Italian Market- sounds like there are a ton of good places there. Next trip! (maybe you can meet up with us then!). :)

  3. Next time try Tony Luke's - far better than both of those combined!
