Book Review: Linger

This week I'm reviewing Linger by Maggie Stiefvater. This is the second book in the series- the first was Shiver, which I loved!

I have to say, though, I'm getting a little more burned out on YA lately. I have a couple more I have to read from the library, and then I think I might switch to some more "adult" reading. I like Young Adult books because I can read them fast, the characters are usually quite good, and the books are all about relationships, which I like. They're also easy to read on the train, so I'll certainly keep reading the genre. But I think I need to mix them with books with a little more substance (maybe a few non-fiction?).

Goodreads Summary: In Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past…and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves…and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love–the light and the dark, the warm and the cold–in a way you will never forget.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved this book. I think I appreciated even more than in Shiver how great the writing is in this series. Everything flows together and some of the passages are really lovely.

I had my doubts about the new characters but in the end I really grew to love both Cole and Isabel. And I was so glad that spending some time on them didn't take away from Sam and Grace, who continued to be awesome.

I thought Grace's relationship with her parents was done just perfectly. Their reaction to her relationship with Sam was very believable.

I was also glad we finally got to learn more about the "werewolf disorder", if you will. I had a lot of questions after the first book, and while I have a feeling if I were a biology major the explanation would annoy me, since I'm not, I was just glad to have some attempt at a better explanation.

Parts of the book were still a little slow, but overall I'm so glad I'm reading this series and can't wait for the final book!

  2. Thanks for the great review! I've read Shiver and agree it was okay. Linger seems to be a better story. I look forward to getting this one. You might also enjoy a new fiction read out called, "A Wind In Montana," by Mitch Davies. I just finished it and really got into the characters. The story focuses on two young adults who are pressured on every side. They must choose the right decision for their future. I love how the story promotes responsibility and at the same time gets in touch with what young people actually go through these days. It's especially a great book for teens.
