This week I'm reviewing Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt.
Summary from NY Times Book Review: This first novel is about an abandoned family, four children ages 6 to 13 . . . With $11 and change, little adult help and a great deal of adult hindrance, the four make their way from Rhode Island to Connecticut on the strength of courage, resourcefulness, good camping instincts and the sheer will to stay together and find a home . . . This is a glowing book . . . An enthralling journey to a gratifying end.
Homecoming by Cynthia VoigtMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I first read this book a long time ago, probably when I was in middle school. I loved it then, and I still love it now. It's the story of the Tillerman children, whose mentally ill mother deserts them in the parking lot of a mall. Dicey, the eldest of the four children, has to take responsibility and get her siblings first to their cousin's house in Bridgeport, and finally to the Eastern Shore of Maryland to see if their grandmother will take them in.
I love reading about how they get by on so little- they have basically no money, no transportation, and they're just kids. Dicey is a great character who has to take on so much responsibility at such a young age, and she really loves her brothers and sister.
I would definitely recommend this book. It's like what YA used to be. It's a good book even for adults, though I found it a bit more tedious than I remember it being when I read it at age 12. This is the first in a series, but I don't remember enjoying the rest of the series as much, so I think I'm going to stop here this time around.
